🦊 In this GCSE Biology video, we describe hormonal contraception as methods preventing pregnancy through hormonal actions, excluding protection against sexually transmitted infections, which requires barrier methods like condoms. Examples include oral contraceptives (the pill), contraceptive injections, skin patches, implants, and hormonal IUDs, each releasing hormones like estrogen or progesterone to inhibit follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) production, thereby preventing egg maturation and ovulation. These methods vary in duration, from weeks for injections to years for implants, and work primarily by stopping the fertilization process.
