This is brought to us by Kawahinekapuheleikapokane. Say that 10 times real fast. Shared with us from John Kaimikaua. As ammeter of his halau for 6 years I did not want to for get this chant. Being that I am not a chanter I did what I knew best, made it into a song to remember. Iʻll let people take care of their own house before they come yelling at me. I only do music and this was my chance to preserve this for generations to come. John once said that this knowledge was once a big tree that covered all the islands and all that was left was this root. It is an effort to grow this root and branch it across the islands once again.
It speaks of some of the winds of Makanalua, the ancient name of the peninsula at Kalaupapa, Molokai. We have Kalawao to the east, Lehua to the north and Kalaupapa to the west, and the cliffs are the Paneʻeneʻe mountains to the south. Some of the winds would bring the smell of the lipoa from the shoreline and it would be dizzying. Some of the winds would rip leaves off the branches of trees as known in the Damien writings. Some would break up the clouds against the Paneʻeneʻe cliffs and some would circle around the rim of the crater Kauhako. These chants are still danced today with the halau Kukunaokala.
