During our stay at Lums Pond State Park in Bear, Delaware in August 2025 we rode our bikes on the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Trail. The trail travels through two states and is officially called the Michael Castle Trail in Delaware, and the Ben Cardin Recreational Trail in Maryland.
The trail is entirely paved with a length of 14.5 miles from Delaware City, Delaware in the east to Chesapeake City, Maryland in the west. Although there are a couple of steep climbs up above the canal along the trail, most of it is level. There's also a couple of on-road sections with one being from the Lums Pond State Park campground entrance to the Lums Pond Trailhead, and another one taking trail-users around the Summit North Marina.
There are lots of benches along the trail to stop for a break and watch the boats and barges passing through the canal. Restrooms can be found at the St. Georges and Biddle Point trailheads. And for a nice stop about midway on the trail there's the Creamery at St. Georges. Sadly, it was closed both times we passed by it, but to be fair, we rode the trail in the morning.
It took us about 3 hours to ride the 29 miles of trail. We enjoyed every minute of it. Just be aware that there isn't a lot of shade in the sections along the water. If you ride on a warm day you'll want to bring plenty of water!
