Togo: Is the diaspora missing out on opportunities to be involved in building the country's infrastructure?
After the visit of the public authorities at the beginning of December 2021 in order to prepare the residents on the Adidogomé, Ségbé road, for the imminent launch of the reconstruction work of the entire road, on January 19, EBOMAF's Togolese subsidiary, in charge of this work, was already starting preparatory work as a prelude to the official launch of this project. It should be noted that the Adidogomé-Ségbé road, 10 km long and built in 2010, was in a state of advanced degradation and deserved to be completely redone. On January 26, work officially began and are ongoing.
On the site, significant resources are deployed and roadworks take place day and night. Clearance of the right-of-way, construction of gutters, earthworks, "everything is set to complete the work earlier than planned," says the company which, at the same time, has planned several diversion routes for users.
Moreover, the company says, a "new front" has been opened at the border of Ghana (where the road ends), in order to accelerate the work.
More than 8 Km by 10 Km are already cleaned, the gutters are being built and the earthworks are happening continuously.
Togo has a road network of 11777 km of which just 2100 km are paved. In addition, it should be added that the budget allocated by the Togolese state to the public works sector has increased from 86 billion CFA francs in 2021 to 117 billion in 2022, an increase of 36%. This presents significant business opportunities in the field of construction for the Togolese diaspora.
Indeed, opportunities for those of the Togolese diaspora with financial means, are, by investing in or setting up companies specialized in the asphalt road paving and bidding for government contracts.
Many Africans in the diaspora are still of the belief, that only Westerners have the technology to build good roads in Africa. As a result, they rarely get involved in major African infrastructure projects. And yet, as proof this belief is erroneous, the contracts for the works on the roads, Adidogomé to Ségbé and Lomé to Kpalimé, and in northern Togo sections from Pya to Sarakawa and Kanté, up to Tandjoaré, are executed by an African company, Ebomaf, whose owner is the burkinabe billionaire called, Mahamadou Bonkoungou.
If Ebomaf is able to do a good job with expertise imported from the West, then any African and Togolese can also invest in the development of Togo and Africa through the transfer of technology.
