Le Généreux was a French ship of the line, launched in the late 18th century during the height of naval warfare. Ships like this displayed their power and allegiance by flying their flags, symbols of identity, nation, and pride.
One of the most remarkable details of Le Généreux’s story is that its flag still survives today. After the ship was captured by the British Royal Navy in 1800, its enormous ensign was preserved. That historic flag can now be seen in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London.
