I worked in data recovery for a bureau that officially didn’t exist. My job was restoring damaged media—old reel-to-reel tapes, degraded cassettes, recordings recovered from fires, floods, and forgotten storage rooms. Extract the audio. Label the file. Send it up the chain. Don’t ask why certain boxes were misfiled or why some cases were sealed twice.

I noticed Case 77 because the catalog number was wrong.

The seal tag read: Ural District, 1982.
Inside was a single cassette and a thin incident report written in dry, administrative language. A listening post lost during a blizzard. Generator failure. Personnel presumed frozen before relief arrived.

The report was clean. Too clean.

When I pressed play, the first sound wasn’t wind or static—it was a deep mechanical hum that never faded. A man’s voice followed, calm and methodical, as if recording notes for someone who would need them later.

Blizzards don’t make temperatures rise.

What follows is a reconstruction of the events surrounding Case 77, pieced together from recovered audio, incident logs, and footage that was never meant to be archived together.

Some facilities don’t go dark when the power fails.
