Stories - whenever you hear that word, what is the first thing which comes in your mind - novels, short stories, Story tellers? But what if somebody tells you each and every one of us is a story teller. Renowned Psychiatrist Alok Bajpai shares with us his insight into the matter.
The first question is what would we be doing if every basic necessity of ours is fulfilled? We’d be dreaming and weaving stories of our lives just like the caveman. Humans work hard to make their dreams come true. And after doing that what we become is our story, ‘THE STORY OF ME’.
Speaking about the structure of the human brain he very subtly explains about the functions of unconscious and conscious part of the brain; And how at the end of the day, we are nothing more than what our conscious mind makes us do, our unconscious side is something that we ourselves barely manage to explore.
Telling us all about “the constant chit-chattering of neurons”, “the 500 millisecond snippets” and how our brain loves jumping from one me to another. Like we are students at a moment and a friend or a lover the next. That there is no single me, but a collection of me’s which describe a single person. Further he tells that these stories don’t just make a person rather different stories collide against each other to form communities, science, religion and the God.
Psychiatry, Physics, Film, Music, Literature and Teaching are only some of the things that occupy Dr. Alok Bajpai's wide world. He is currently a Senior Consultant of Psychiatry at Regency Hospital, Kanpur and consultant psychiatrist for IIT Kanpur students. A consistent focus of his work throughout has been child and adolescent mental health. He is also a regular columnist who writes about issues of psychiatry and sexuality for general readers. A special passion of Alok is the transformational processes of the mind to enhance inner harmony and peace as Mahatma Gandhi remains his leitmotif and example. He regularly anchors a multimedia interactive program on Mahatma Gandhi for schools and colleges - essentially to introduce and provoke children youth and adults to think and re-discover Gandhi’s message of nonviolence.
