Total Hip Replacement (THR) | Hip Arthroplasty Surgery
Total Hip Replacement, also known as Total Hip Arthroplasty, is one of the most successful and commonly performed orthopaedic procedures worldwide. It is indicated for patients suffering from severe hip pain and functional limitation due to conditions such as advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, post-traumatic arthritis, and certain hip fractures.
In this procedure, the damaged hip joint is replaced with artificial components (prosthesis), which include:
• A metal or ceramic femoral head
• A polyethylene or ceramic acetabular liner
• A femoral stem fixed using cemented or uncemented techniques
The primary goals of Total Hip Replacement are:
✔ Relief from chronic pain
✔ Restoration of joint movement
✔ Improvement in walking ability
✔ Enhanced quality of life
Modern advances in implant design, bearing surfaces, surgical approaches, and perioperative protocols have significantly improved patient outcomes, implant longevity, and early rehabilitation. Most patients are able to stand and walk within 24–48 hours after surgery and return to daily activities within a few weeks with proper physiotherapy.
Total Hip Replacement has consistently demonstrated excellent long-term results, with survival rates of more than 90–95% at 15–20 years in multiple large registry and cohort studies.
This video demonstrates key surgical steps, including exposure, femoral head removal, acetabular preparation, component positioning, and final reduction, highlighting the importance of precision, alignment, and soft tissue balance for optimal outcomes.
