The shipwreck at Glentana is a fascinating piece of maritime history. The British steamer Baralong, towing a floating dock intended to be the first in South Africa, faced a severe north-west gale on October 30, 1902, while en route from Mossel Bay to Durban. The dock, measuring 380 feet in length and 80 feet in width, was capable of accommodating a vessel of 4,500 tons. The freight cost alone was a significant R8,000 (Today that is valued at R922,400.00)
During the storm near Cape St. Blaize, the port bridle broke, leaving the pontoon vulnerable to the wind and waves. Despite efforts by the crew to reattach the dock using a flexible wire hawser, the vessels drifted perilously close to land due to the high seas. Ultimately, the decision was made to abandon the dock, which was subsequently beached in a natural creek at Glentana, where it settled with its stern and bow on the rocks.
The incident attracted considerable attention, with curious onlookers from nearby towns such as George, Mossel Bay, and Oudtshoorn flocking to the site. The floating dock's remnants can still be seen today, and the location has become a point of interest for visitors and locals alike, offering a scenic coastal walk at low tide.
