California homeowners may face new insurance fee after costly LA wildfires
Some California homeowners could face a one-time surcharge on their insurance bills to help cover wildfire claims paid by the California FAIR Plan, the state’s insurer of last resort. Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara approved the cost-sharing move following destructive Los Angeles-area wildfires. A judge recently allowed part of a lawsuit from Consumer Watchdog to proceed, questioning whether the surcharge violates FAIR Plan statutes, while upholding the commissioner’s authority to permit such pass-throughs.
