Moscow. Lubyanka Prison. February 1938. A man sits in an interrogation room. He has been here before, in this building, in rooms like this one, but always on the other side of the equation, always as a representative of the system rather than its subject. He is forty-four years old, solidly built, with the physical presence of someone who has spent his entire adult life in military service, who has ridden horses and slept in the field and commanded men in combat. His name is on the roster of the Red Army's most experienced cavalry officers. He has served for twenty-two years, since the Revolution, through the Civil War, through the campaigns of the 1920s and 1930s that extended and consolidated Soviet power across the vast territories of the new state.
Now he is a prisoner.
The men across the table from him are NKVD investigators. They have documents. They have the names of colleagues who have already confessed, already named him as a participant in the conspiracy that exists nowhere except in the forced confessions of men who were broken before him. They have the instruments of the interrogation process that have broken men stronger than him, men with more political connections, men with more to lose and more to offer as currency for survival.
