What if we had an approach of solving a large aircraft structure that may have millions degrees of freedom, and we were able to reduce the problem to dozens of uncoupled equations of motion? We can use mode shapes and frequencies using the approach discussed in Lecture 15A to decouple the mass matrix and stiffness matrix. Here we assume that the motion of the beam only depends on a truncated set of mode shapes.
