London Bridge
By the 1960s, the City of London decided the 1831 bridge no longer met modern traffic demands and opted to replace it.
On April 18, 1968, the bridge (or more precisely the façade blocks and historic stonework) was sold to American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch for about US $2.46 million.
McCulloch was developing Lake Havasu City (founded 1964) and wanted a tourist-attraction centerpiece to drive interest and land sales.
The original granite and masonry blocks from London were dismantled, each stone numbered for reassembly, shipped to the U.S. (via California) and transported to Arizona.
