Ever since 9/11, when an airliner suddenly goes silent over American airspace, it triggers an immediate question: is the silence caused by a simple radio-out issue, or something FAR more sinister? In 2009, air traffic controllers would face this exact question as they watched their radar screens with growing alarm. A state-of-the-art Airbus A320 with 149 souls aboard was cruising at 37,000 feet, completely isolated from the world below. The controllers tried to contact the aircraft numerous times: no answer. Military commanders were notified and placed fighter jets on high alert. This is the story of Northwest Airlines Flight 188.
