After the Revolution of 1917, Russia lost not only its ruling elite and the royal dynasty, but also a huge part of its society.
Around three million people went into exile — officers of the White Army, government officials, scientists, artists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. This marked the beginning of the first wave of Russian emigration.
The main centers of the diaspora were Paris, Berlin, Constantinople, and Belgrade — and in the Far East, Harbin and Shanghai.
But emigration wasn’t just about “brains” — it was also about enormous wealth. According to different estimates, between 100 and 500 million gold rubles were taken abroad. In today’s terms, that would equal hundreds of billions of dollars. Along with money, people carried out jewels, icons, paintings, and family collections. Many of these treasures are now preserved in museums across Europe and America.
The bottom line? The revolution instantly stripped Russia of millions of talented people and vast wealth. And while emigrants built vibrant cultural centers abroad, over time, most Russians assimilated, becoming part of French, German, or American society.
