Does resolution really matter when printing large photographs?
In this video I put that question to the test by printing a large photograph from the legendary Leica M9 using my professional Epson SureColor P6570. The Leica M9 produces 18 megapixel files, a specification that today might seem modest compared to modern cameras pushing 40, 50 or even 60 megapixels. Yet when it comes to printing photographs, numbers alone rarely tell the full story.
Photography has always been about the final image, not the specification sheet. The moment light is translated into a print is where a photograph truly comes alive. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate that resolution, while helpful, is not the defining factor in creating beautiful large prints.
The Leica M9 remains one of the most beloved digital rangefinder cameras ever made. Its CCD sensor renders tones, contrast and micro detail in a way that many photographers still prefer today. When these files are prepared correctly and printed on a high quality printer like the Epson P6570, the result is a print with depth, clarity and character that easily stands up to much higher resolution cameras.
I often see photographers dismiss older cameras because of megapixel numbers. But in real world photography, especially when printing, there are other factors that matter far more. Lens quality, sensor rendering, tonal response, dynamic range, sharpening technique, and printing workflow all contribute to the final image. A well captured 18 megapixel photograph can easily produce a large, detailed print that feels rich and immersive.
To push this idea even further, I have also printed images from the classic Epson RD‑1s, a camera that produces only 6 megapixel files. Despite the low resolution by modern standards, those images still translate beautifully to paper when processed and printed correctly. This proves that the relationship between megapixels and print size is often misunderstood.
In this video you will see the entire process. I take a photograph captured with the Leica M9, prepare the file for print, and send it to the Epson P6570 to produce a large format print. Watching the image come out of the printer reveals something that many photographers forget in the digital age: prints are far more forgiving than screens.
When we judge images on a computer monitor we are often zooming in to 100 percent or even 200 percent, analyzing pixels rather than experiencing the photograph. But when you view a print at a natural viewing distance, the photograph is perceived as a whole composition. Texture, tonal transitions and subject matter become far more important than raw pixel count.
This is one of the reasons why cameras like the Leica M9 continue to hold a special place in photography. The files carry a distinctive look, rich contrast and beautiful tonal transitions that translate exceptionally well to paper. Combined with high quality lenses and a thoughtful printing workflow, even an 18 megapixel image can produce a stunning large format print.
If you enjoy photography with Leica cameras, classic digital sensors, or you are interested in learning how to get the most out of your images when printing, this video will give you a different perspective on resolution and print quality.
Megapixels are only one piece of the puzzle. What truly matters is the photograph itself and how it lives on paper.
