I (27M) cut contact with my mom years ago after she moved on immediately following my stepfather’s death and started a new family that completely pushed me aside. I built my own life and made it clear I didn’t want a relationship with my half-sister. Years later, after addiction, jail, and child services tore everything apart, my family decided I should step up as her guardian. I said no — repeatedly.
Now she’s in foster care, my relatives are calling me heartless, and I’m being confronted in public for “abandoning family.” I could take her in… I just don’t want to. Am I really the villain for refusing a role I never chose?
