3.8 million years ago, in what is now Laetoli, Tanzania, a group of early human ancestors walked across freshly fallen volcanic ash—unaware they were leaving behind one of the most profound fossils in history: the first preserved human footprints.
In this cinematic reconstruction, we follow a small band of Australopithecus afarensis, living in a dangerous, changing landscape. When a nearby volcano erupts, it coats the plains in ash. Later, light rains turn the ground to sticky mud. As the family moves in search of shelter and food, their bare feet press into the soft ash, recording every step for eternity.
Through survival, play, parenting, and movement across the plains, these ancient hominins—still ape-like, yet deeply human—take steps that echo through the ages.
