This work was made as part of our 'An experiment in Virtual Environment' project (2016-17), made possible with funding from Arts Council England and supported by Samsung.
The Apollo Pavilion (Grade II*) was designed by Victor Pasmore and built in Peterlee new town in 1969. This Virtual Reality (VR) artwork explores a second pavilion by Pasmore that was intended for the South West 5 phase of Peterlee, but never built.
We discovered the SW5 Pavilion on early plans of Peterlee during a research project on Pasmore and Peterlee in 2012. Then, when setting up the project exhibition at the DLI Museum & Art Gallery in Durham, full architectural drawings of the second pavilion nobody knew existed turned up in a box of papers from the Pasmore estate. Those drawings form the basis of this work.
