SC says the promise of freebies in elections is a "serious issue". CJI NV Ramana says the court had asked the Election Commission of India to frame guidelines, but nothing has been done so far. CJI Ramana said: "This is a serious issue. The freebies' budget goes beyond the actual budget. This affects elections."
A notice has been issued to the Centre and ECI to take action against Political parties who offer freebies as election promises. The next hearing in the matter will be in four weeks.
