Lucy is an Asian elephant that was captured from the wild and sold to the Edmonton Valley Zoo in Canada, back in 1977. She should have still been nursing when kidnapped from her mother and herd to become a live exhibit for the next almost 5 decades.
Lucy lives in a tiny barren concrete barn all alone. She has never lived with another of her own species which is horribly cruel for an intelligent and social animal that would normally spend her entire life as part of a close-knit matriarchal herd.
Lucy suffers from numerous captivity related medical ailments that will reduce her life expectancy. The climate in Edmonton is frigid most of the year with temperatures dropping as low as -30C or colder during the long winter months.Lucy deserves to finally retire in a warm climate sanctuary in the company of other elephants.
