A piece by Michael Wolters for very large orchestra, performed by Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, conducted by Daniele Rosina.
"It’s a piece that represents me and my attitude towards music making. It’s based on John Baldessari’s work "I will not make any more boring art".
Conceptual artist John Baldessari was invited to work with students at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design: “As there wasn’t enough money for me to travel to Nova Scotia, I proposed that the students voluntarily write ‘I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art’ on the walls of the gallery, like punishment. To my surprise they covered the walls.” (www.moma.org)
As a Postmodernist I have stayed away from making clear statements for most of my artistic career, preferring ambiguity over message. With AMAECHI ( • Amaechi ) , created together with Seán Clancy for the Commonwealth Games in 2022, this changed, and I noticed how empowering it was to say the things that I really wanted to say. I also noticed that I can still be playful and playfully ambiguous while making statements. That’s what’s happening in this piece.
For John Baldessari and/or Gary Lineker is composed in three parts, three interludes and a coda that are played continuously without interruptions:
Part 1: I will not make any more boring music
Interlude 1: I will not make any more boring music
Part 2: I will not make any more boring music
Interlude 2: I will not make any more boring music
Part 3: I will not make any more boring music
Interlude 3: I will not make any more boring music
Coda: I will not make any more boring music
All music in Parts 1-3 and Interlude 2 are based on ways of saying the line “I will not make any more boring music”. Interlude 1 is based on one of Sibelius’ 5th Symphony and its application in Strawberry Switchblade’s Since Yesterday. Interlude 3 is based on the Wedding Music from my first opera The Bridegroom.
I would like to thank everybody at RBC for their amazing support to make this piece happen. Oh, and if you are wondering why the orchestra is so big, well, it’s because that’s what we can do at the Conservatoire."
