Aisha, a young Nigerian woman seeking asylum in Ireland, lives a life defined by uncertainty. Having fled her home after the violent murders of her brother and father one year prior, she is adrift in a sea of overly complicated administrative process, whilst simultaneously enduring daily micro-aggressions at both her temporary residence and the salon in which she works. With no one to turn to, Aisha finds an unlikely ally in sweet-natured Conor (the ever-excellent Josh O’Connor), an employee at her accommodation centre who is himself struggling with painful memories from the past. The product of director Frank Berry’s extensive research into Ireland’s widely criticised Direct Provision system, Aisha is a beautifully intimate character study, and a quietly powerful critique on bureaucratic systems which compound the trauma and displacement experienced by those seeking refuge.
