Dutch Schultz, Bumpy Johnson, and Stephanie St. Clair—three names that would ignite one of the most violent underworld wars in Harlem history.
It was 8:43 PM on Saturday, November 7th, 1931, inside Le Coq d'Or, one of Manhattan’s most exclusive restaurants, when a seemingly elegant dinner became the spark that would later explode into the infamous Harlem Numbers War.

That night, Stephanie “Madame Queen” St. Clair, the undisputed ruler of Harlem’s policy gambling empire, was dining with her trusted protégé and enforcer, Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, along with close associates. Fresh off a highly profitable week, they discussed expansion plans—plans that quietly crossed into territory claimed by Dutch Schultz, New York’s most feared bootlegger and crime boss.

At this point in history, Dutch Schultz’s war on Harlem’s Black numbers operators had not yet reached full-scale violence. The assassinations, intimidation campaigns, and forced takeovers that would define 1932 and 1933 were still to come. Tension existed, but open confrontation had been avoided—until this moment.

St. Clair and Bumpy Johnson believed they were untouchable inside Le Coq d'Or. The restaurant had only recently begun admitting wealthy Black patrons, and it was filled with powerful white elites who would never tolerate public gang violence. Surely, Schultz wouldn’t dare cross that line.

They underestimated him.

Because when Dutch Schultz openly insulted Stephanie St. Clair in front of Bumpy Johnson, the balance of power shifted. What followed would not just humiliate Harlem’s queen—it would mark the beginning of a brutal criminal conflict where only one side would emerge as truly legendary.

And this… was the moment everything changed.
