On 26th September 2019, the legendary German duo Mouse on Mars presented its newest composition based on samples from the Polish Radio Experimental Studio (PRES). Stream their concert live on www.polskieradio.pl & www.culture.pl.
‘Some people call it a cacophony of decibels; others – a joyful song of the future. But that is precisely what the right to experiment is all about’, the voice-over enthusiastically announced in the famous Polish television film chronicle from the mid-1960s devoted to the Polish Radio Experimental Studio. After the Thaw, everyone wanted to play with their new found freedom – everyone wanted to experiment with sound: Zbigniew Wiszniewski, Andrzej Dobrowolski & Bogusław Schaeffer of PRES, the neurotic pioneer of Polish minimalism Tomasz Sikorski, the brilliant self-taught sound engineer Eugeniusz Rudnik, as well as classics of Norwegian and Croation new music such as Arne Nordheim and Dubravko Detoni.
Years later, visionaries of new electronic music are referring to the achievements of Polish pioneers of modern sound production more and more often, among them the legendary German duo Mouse on Mars, established in 1993 by Andy Tom and Jan St. Wermer. In the last decade of the 20th century, these two found themselves – alongside artists such as Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Amon Tobin – among the pioneers and main representatives of so-called intelligent dance music. The unique combination of elements of popular and experimental music has brought the band notoriety in circles far beyond the universe of dance music.
It comes as no surprise then, that @Mouse on Mars was more than happy to reach into the Polish Radio Experimental Studio sample library, published in 2019 by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Ableton company. Their song ‘Playtime’, created using these samples, will be performed for the first time at a concert organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and Polish Radio during the Digital Cultures conference in Warsaw.
So far, over 20,000 artists and music producers from around the world have used the samples from the Polish Radio Experimental Studio made available by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. Among them Bartosz Weber and Aleksandra Grünholz, who will join Mouse on Mars on 26th September 2019 at the Agnieszka Osiecka Polish Radio Concert Studio.
