#1983 #Aircheck #WBLS Vintage NYC Radio, B-Boy Classic. Old School Hip Hop. World Famous Supreme Team's Buffalo Gals, as heard in New York City and New Jersey when Hip Hop began dominating the airwaves. The lp was produced by Malcolm McLaren and Art of Noise ft. WHBI's World Famous Supreme Team on the mix.
We called it Hip Hop to distinguish it from Rap music in 1983. It was intended to be a new genre of New Wave called Duck Rock, but the term "Hip Hop" was made popular a year prior by Mann Parish ref. Hip Hop Be Bop. Graffiti Rock was the final attempt to name the genre in 1984.
Before that, it had simply been known as Street Beat music, evolved from Beatnik poetry. Electronic beats were introduced in the mid 60's by the Grateful Dead during the Acid Tests. Kraftwerk developed that advanced sound and developed the music called Hip Hop i.e. Electronic Dance Music.
Def Jam was a Punk label that quickly saw the value in letting rappers handle electronic drum machines. Rap music was simply rapping over Disco, which was common in the 1970's. Hip Hop was rapping over electronic beats produced by Pop Artists. It was Hip "Pop". Check out M and the pop locking song called Pop Muzik(1) that opened the door for Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals on MTV.
