From crackers to five course meal and dancing girls. ANYTHING you want to do is out there. It depends on how much money you want to spend.

Good
• Many transmission choices
• Below 400 horse you can maintain your rear axle (if an 8 inch or higher)
• Fits the popular smaller engine bay cars like Falcon, Comet, 1965-66 Mustang, Maverick and Comet—both of which have the smallest engine bay of all the Fords. It will also fit any thing else that came factory with a 260-302 with a blue oval and four wheels from the 1960s and 70s.
Not so Good
• Lacks presence in engine bays like the Fairlane, F100 and Galaxie. People expect to see FE power in these cars.

Budget build:
302, flat tappet performance cam, hyperutectic pistons with 9.5:1 compression ratio. Good aluminum heads and intake with 600 CFM carb. Set of shortie or Tri Y headers. Probably 300 horse.

460
For shear torque nothing beats the 385 series engine. It is the cheapest Ford big block to build. Even with a set of stock D0VE heads it will brutalize a drivetrain.

Good
• Was available in the F250s up until 1996 so tough automatic overdrive transmissions are available though expensive.
• Gobs of axle twisting, neck snapping torque.
• Will bolt into 1970-71 Torinos/ Montegos and 1972-77 Gran Torinos and Montegos, and 1971-73 Mustangs are easier because the bays are designed for these engine it is a direct fit. Galaxies and F Series can run easily due to all the room.
Not so Good
• The 460 can be shoved in to 1967-70 Mustang and Cougars (that offered an FE) as well as the 1963-69 Fairlane. But you will start getting financially penilazed
• Not going into the smaller engine bay cars like Falcon, Comet, 1965-66 Mustang, Maverick and Comet.
• Transmissions.

Budget Build:
460, flat tappet cam, Original DOVE or D0OV heads or good aftermarket aluminum heads and intake, 700 CFM carb. Manifolds or headers. 400 plus horse.

Runner Up:
351 Windsor
All the stuff from the 302 will bolt up.
Getting hard to find.

Why no Clevelands or FE?
