Composed in 1935, Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto features a twelve-tone series that concludes with four notes in steps of whole tones, coinciding with the opening of Johann Rudolph Ahle's hymn 'Es ist genug' (1662), famously utilized by J.S. Bach in his Cantata No. 60. In the second movement of the Concerto, Berg provides a choral harmonization of this hymn, employing both tonal and dodecaphonic techniques, and even including a quotation from Bach’s own harmonization.
My arrangement reduces the orchestral score to six staves, preserving all musical material and enhancing the accessibility of the structural and thematic complexities of Berg’s composition for those studying his harmonic techniques. Besides the choral section itself, I found interesting to include also the canon that begins the first variation.
