“The Juneteenth Story: From Galveston, TX to Minnesota” film traces the history of Juneteenth, starting with its origins on Galveston Island, and drawing the connection to present-day Minnesota, where the holiday was observed state-wide for the first time in 2023.
Director / Producer Monique Linder states,:
“I am eternally grateful to the people of Galveston for welcoming us to their beautiful island and sharing their history with us, and for the support of Minnesota Humanities Center and Ujamaa Place which made this film possible. It was truly an honor of a lifetime. The history of slavery in this country is dark. It is also triumphant. And I think that’s what Juneteenth is in a way – a consciousness of these antithetical truths. Nevertheless it is an ugly, painful part of our history we must confront in order to move past – never to forget, but reconcile.
