Today we are talking about Chiusi. According to legend the town was built by Clusius, the son of Tyrrhenus, one of the legendary Lydian founders of Etruria, and so it´s named after him. It was famous for two things, the first one was the mines of precious rocks such as limestone, marble and alabastar, which they would later use for to build coffins, urns, vases and some art works. Secondly, Clevsim was also famous for his military might, in fact they were one of the only Etruscan city states which was ever able to defeat Rome in battle. King Lars Porsena is one of the most famous Etruscan kings and it is thought that he captured Rome for a couple of years.
The Etruscan league was composed of 12 main cities; I will make an episode for each, where I talk about the history, the buildings, the people, the culture and the legacy of whatever city I will be covering. There is a lot to say about these cities, they are all fascinating in their own way and I am looking forward to start this series.
