Did you know that sand habitats are also found under water?

And that sand habitats are extreme places? From being really hot during the day and very cold at night and although salt water is everywhere, species can only use rainwater to drink.

There are so many interesting facts to learn about sand habitats and expert Pauline Damer knows them very well: Special insect species that live in the transition zone between the beach and dunes. Endangered bird species such as the sandpiper, oystercatcher and little tern breed there.

But in this interview, we also get a sense of why many parts of sand habitats are facing threats and need conservation. We learn about one particular way of how these habitats can be effectively restored and that sand habitats provide more than benefits for tourism and coastal protection: they are biodiverse, contribute to climate protection and offer environmentally friendly housing!
