Our first backpacking trip of the summer 2021 season was a huge success! Our trip started at the Upper Dungeness Trailhead on Saturday, July 3. We spent that night at Boulder shelter, 6 miles from the trailhead. In the morning (July 4), we made our way up to Marmot Pass then to the top of Buckhorn Mountain. We then came down Buckhorn Pass and took the Tubal Cain Trail back to the Tubal Cain Trailhead. On Saturday, Brad dropped off the group and gear at Upper Dungeness then drove the car to the Tubal Cain Trailhead. He then left the car and biked back down to Upper Dungeness where we stashed the bike in the forest and picked it up on the way down.
We had fantastic weather the entire time and the trail is in excellent condition. The meadows are out in full bloom and are absolutely stunning! The bugs were present but were not too bad - definitely manageable. We only crossed 2 small sections of snow. These were on the trail between Marmot Pass and Boulder Shelter. All of the elevation gained and lost is over very gradual grades except for the climb from Marmot Pass to Buckhorn Mountain.
This trip was 16.5 miles total - 6.5 miles on Saturday, 10 on Sunday. Here is our route on Gaia. Note that we did not see Buckhorn lake, Tubal Cain mine nor the B17 bomber crash site. All 3 of these would be great to see but we were just too tired and uninterested at this point in the trip.

Big shout out to Cooper, Dane and Dave for being part of an awesome crew and making the first trip of the season a major success. I wish I had more negative things to share but overall things went to plan. Hopefully it's a precursor for similar trips this summer but we all know how plans go!
Let me know if you have any more questions and thank you so much for watching!
