THE YEARLING became an instant classic upon its release in 1946. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlins, the movie cast a 10 year old unknown from Nashville, Tennessee, as the young boy who adopts a baby fawn while living with his parents on a farm in rural Florida during the early 1800s. Claude Jarman Jr portrayed Jody and became an overnight sensation. His naturalness in front of the camera was captured by the brilliant director Clarence Brown (NATIONAL VELVET ) who discovered him. Up and coming actor Gregory Peck portrayed Claude's father in the film and they developed a wonderful relationship both on and off screen. From his home in San Francisco, Claude joined Rob Word from for a remote Zoom interview in Nov 2020 to share stories of what it was like to be whisked away to Hollywood and then spend months in the Florida heat shooting the movie.
