In this full-length video I take apart a Hunter’s Lodge MAS-36 (imported via Century Arms) that’s been converted to .308, and walk you through every step of the repairs/cleaning (can I call it a restoration???):
• Cleaning a bolt so stiff it cut my hand
• Removing grime, hand-sanding machining grooves
• Disassembling the forearm to reveal what was done during the conversion
• Fabricating a custom metal plate to restore the forend hook
• Carving the wood stock for proper fit
• Treating surface rust with steam & mineral oil
• Killing mold in the stock, re-oiling with tung oil
• Reassembly in a quick-to-use design (fewer parts than a Lee-Enfield)
• Headspace testing & blank fire check for safe reenacting use
Whether you’re a mil-surp collector, WWII history buff, French Resistance reenactor, or DIY gun restoration guy — you’ll find something here.
Leave a comment: Have you worked on a surplus rifle like this before? What’s your trick for freeing up a stiff bolt?
