The Social Security Administration defers all stroke-related disability claims for 90 days. This is because the prognosis of a stroke victim can change dramatically in that time period. While the effects of a stroke can be very severe initially, it's not uncommon for a victim to recover considerably as time goes on.
A Deferral Period Shouldn't Stop You from Applying for Benefits. The position of the SSA is that it's impossible to know the long-term outcome of a stroke victim in the first 90 days, but don't take that to mean that you should delay your application. Getting your application submitted early means that you'll receive your benefits sooner.
