IRA BOMBING/TERRORIST ATTACK ON WALMER (DEAL) NAVAL BARRACKS
An interesting and educational walk around the Royal Marine Depot, Walmer, Deal. The Depot was a Royal Marine recruit training centre that expanded and took over an adjacent Army Barracks in the 18th Century.
Interestingly; both an Army and Naval Hospital were based on this site.
From 1930, the Walmer Barracks, served as the headquarters for the Royal Naval School of Music subsequently renamed The Royal Marines School of Music post WW2.
1977 brought the closure of the training Depot, the site became the HQ of the 41 Commando, then disbanded four years later.
1988, Part of the site was sold off for redevelopment/housing. Leaving The Royal Marines School of Music only on this site, until 1996 when the school was relocated to HMNB Portsmouth.
On the 22nd September 1989, 08:20 am The Royal Marines School of Music recreation centre was hit by an IRA Terrorist Bomb, that resulted in a three storey building flattened. Sadly, this terrorist attack resulted in the deaths of 11 Musicians and injured 22 other Marines.
The whole site has now been renovated for housing and apartments.
