Profile: Yuko
A single mother from Japan. Living on a mountain in very country side Japan with her son, Nuh chan.
After the suicide of her beloved mother, her heart shattered. Suffering from severe depression, she seeked to escape reality, then moved to Byron Bay, Australia. She met a Spanish girl there and learned through their conversations that she had also lost a close family member to suicide. For the first time, she found someone who understood her pain, realizing that she was not alone that there are other people who experience the same, and understand her completely. This encounter led to a profound paradigm shift, instantly lifting the depression she had suffered from for many years.
Yuko became so grateful for the ability to have conversation in English, which made her interaction with the Spanish girl possible. She then believed that by using English and sharing life experiences with various people not only from our own country, but from all over the world could help heal our hearts, no matter what kind of pain we have.
Driven by this belief, she incurred a debt of nearly 100,000 US dollars and opened "English Conversation café and bar, Cafe Byron Bay" in Asakusa, Tokyo in 2013. This establishment, where Japanese people learning English and foreign tourists/residenses visiting Asakusa mingled, quickly became a famous "Borderless restaurant." It also provided opportunities to connect with around 20,000 Japanese people who wished to speak English, and the café became a catalyst for many to change their lives, including international marriages, overseas relocations, and job changes to desired workplaces.
Furthermore, to offer services themed around 'Meeting people from around the world,' which had not existed in Japan before, Yuko founded Ekklesia Co., Ltd. in 2019. In 2020, she launched the "Global Community Byron Bay," an online salon that combines real and online interactions, helping people make friends worldwide and learn to speak English. With the mission of "Helping people heal through the encounters they gain, by using the power of English," she continued her activities.
By having her first child, 'Nuh' and reaching the 10-year milestone of her business in 2022, she decided to close the company and stay close to her son as a stay at home mom.
In 2025, she decided to drastically change her way of cooking and eating start practicing the 'Simple traditional Japanese meals'. It is an experiement to see if the Japanese legend, Nanboku Mizuno's theory of 'Enhancing fortune by eating less' actually works. As well as the opportunity to practice the 'Simple traditonal Japanese meals' along the way, and share all the amazing recipes that ancient Japanese people used to use a lont time ago.
