"The Temple of Mars" - Track 2 from my album "Echoes of Ancient Rome". This album features original compositions for solo lyre, in a selection of ancient musical modes, mostly inspired by the gods & Temples of ancient Rome...
Mars was the ancient Roman god of war. Unlike ancient Greece, where about 60 fragments of ancient Greek musical notation have been miraculously preserved, only one pitiful shard of written music has ever been discovered from ancient Rome - a few measures of melody by Terencio. However, as Roman high culture was so heavily influenced from the ancient Greeks, it is very likely that the ancient Roman composers used the same ancient Greek musical modes. "The Temple of Mars" is in the ancient Greek Dorian Mode (not to be confused with the Medieval misnamed "Dorian" mode we are familiar with today!). The original ancient Greek Dorian mode was the equivalent intervals as E-E on the white notes of the piano. Due to a massive Medieval mix up, all the original ancient Greek modes were given the wrong Greek names!
I have used the ancient Greek Dorian mode for this piece, inspired by Mars, the Roman god of war, as according to the writings of Plato & Aristotle, this was the most "manly" of all the ancient Greek modes - it was even sometimes used to inspire bravery in the field of battle.
