A real estate agent is a licensed professional who works on behalf of clients to buy, sell, or rent real estate. Agents are typically affiliated with a brokerage firm and work under the supervision of a broker. They are required to complete a certain number of hours of pre-licensing education and pass a state licensing exam. Real estate agents can represent buyers, sellers, or both, and they earn a commission on the transactions they facilitate.
A REALTOR® is a real estate agent who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), a professional organization for real estate agents. To become a REALTOR®, an agent must complete additional training on the NAR Code of Ethics and pass an exam. As a member of NAR, a REALTOR® is held to a higher standard of professionalism and ethics than a non-member real estate agent.
A broker is a licensed professional who has completed additional education and training beyond that required for a real estate agent license. Brokers can work independently or own a brokerage firm that employs real estate agents. They are authorized to supervise agents and oversee transactions. Brokers are also responsible for ensuring that all real estate transactions comply with state and federal laws and regulations.
In summary, while all three are licensed real estate professionals, a REALTOR® is a member of a professional organization and a broker has completed additional education and training beyond a real estate agent license.
