The peacock, known as Mayura in India, is more than just a colorful bird — it is a symbol of beauty, pride, culture, and heritage. Declared India’s National Bird on 31 January 1963, the peacock represents the spirit of Indian tradition, mythology, and biodiversity.

Scientifically known as Pavo cristatus and commonly called the Blue Peafowl, the peacock belongs to the Phasianidae family. It was chosen as the national bird not only for its stunning appearance but also because it is widely found across India, easily recognizable, and deeply connected to Indian history and religious beliefs.

From being the vehicle of Lord Kartikeya to appearing on Mauryan coins and inspiring the famous Mughal Peacock Throne (Takht-e-Taus), the peacock holds a special place in Indian civilization.
