Here’s my transcription of the Rare Earth song “Born To Wander”. This song comes from their 1970 album Ecology. The bass player on this track was John Persh.

I’ve listed this song as a beginner song, but don’t let that make you complacent. There’s a good chance you’ll fumble a little if you do. I did. 😉

I had never heard this song before. It’s got a really good groove!

On my first take, I listened back to critique how I was sitting with the groove, and I found that I was rushing the “and of 1” ever so slightly. When I focused on waiting just a fraction of a second longer, it created a nice “falling into beat two” feel, which sounded much cooler than what I was playing before. 😊

I think this one is good for a beginner because it introduces some more intermediate rhythms in a way that is not too difficult. When it’s written out, it can look a little intimidating and busy, but I think you’ll find the main rhythm comes quite naturally and the fingering is pretty simple. Try to match what you are playing with the rhythm and notes on the stave, and really try to understand how it all fits together. Writing out the rhythms really, really helps with this. Hint hint. 😉
