Take a look inside the New Amsterdam Theatre, the oldest operating theater venue on Broadway in New York's Theater District. Built in 1903 to host William Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream, fans can still see characters and motifs from the play throughout the architectural details. In 1913 Florenz Ziegfeld brought his lavish variety show the Ziegfeld Follies to the theater, but the looming Great Depression forced it to close by 1927. Like other Broadway theaters the New Amsterdam fell on hard times and after years of disrepair no one knew if it could be saved. Luckily Disney came to the rescue and restored it to its former glory and reopened it in 1997. The Tony-award winning Lion King reigned there till 2006, and in 2014 it became home for the highly acclaimed Aladdin. The New Amsterdam's success sparked other theaters to renovate, ensuring that Broadway's lights continue to shine for a new generation of fans.
