BILL WATROUS
BILL WATROUS - It all began some thirty-odd years ago in Middletown, Connecticut, where Bill was born with an impeccable pedigree (father a trombonist with such top dance bands of the period as Irving Aaronson's Commanders, Henry Thies and Paul Whiteman). His budding musical talents overcame his father's reluctance to let him follow the financially unstable path of a professional musician. When he was six he began to learn the rudiments of good musicianship relaxation and non-pressure control of his instrument.
"My father was my first musical influence. He had this beautiful pure tone, ideal for playing ballads a kind of Tommy Dorsey, Jack Jenney sound."
Watrous junior took that pure tone and built on it. "Later on, I heard Vic Dickenson on those wonderful Vanguard LPs that John Hammond produced in the '50s. He and Benny Morton really opened me up." This "opening up" can only be compared to the mystical opening of the third eye, for Bill absorbed the sights and sounds of life, cleaned and refined them through his instrument, until today his technique is near-perfect. His speed, control and execution are phenomenal, while his range, all in the space of a few bars, remind you of Dizzy Gillespie at one end of the scale and an old time New Orleans tuba player at the other.
