The official theme song for my channel, “City of Steam”, was originally composed by my friend, Jesse Walsh! Check out the full song here on his YouTube channel:    • [J-MASS THEME] City of Steam

Hidden deep in a thick, swampy forest in East Greenwich, Rhode Island sits the decaying wreckage of a plane crash, unmoved for over 53 years. On November 22nd, 1971, this plane, a twin-engine Aero Commander 560A, departed from Chatham, Massachusetts, bound for arrival in Newark, New Jersey. On board were six total people, including a pilot, a co-pilot, and four passengers—two of whom were higher-ups at Prudential Financial. Unfortunately, a variety of factors would ultimately result in this plane's impending doom as it took off into the sky. Firstly, the Aero Commander 560A was a faulty plane, with a myriad of technical issues that, even in 1971, were widely known. This primarily included engine failure. It was also an outdated model, having been built many years prior, in 1956. Secondly, as the plane was flying high in the sky over Rhode Island, the weather began to worsen significantly. Heavy fog, sleet, and icy conditions quickly overtook the plane, reducing its visibility and performance. As the pilots attempted to request an emergency landing at nearby T. F. Green Airport, the engines suddenly failed, and the plane crashed down into a forested swamp in the town of East Greenwich. While all six people on board were injured in the crash, there were no immediate deaths upon impact. Sadly, one of them, a 58-year-old woman, would pass away en route to the hospital, as a result of her injuries. Due to the plane’s difficult-to-reach location, now submerged in swampy waters in a dense forest, it has been left behind for half a century, slowly being reclaimed by nature and the elements.

This plane wreck has been on my urban exploration bucket list for years, so I was wicked excited to finally check it out and explore this obscure, albeit fascinating, piece of Rhode Island history! Joined by my good friend and collaborator Noah Faraday, we made the tedious trek through the thick, dense thickets and brush, before trudging through marshy swampland with foot-deep standing water. Even in the middle of December, with all of the leaf cover and foliage dead, navigating through the thorn-covered brush—with no trails—was an arduous task! Nonetheless, we arrived at the plane crash, and I was immediately awestruck. The entire body of the plane, including the wings, tail, nose, and other parts, was completely intact, save for scrap parts scattered around the premises. I could also make out markings still left behind on the plane’s exterior, from the blue-and-white paint to the registration number. Most interestingly, Noah and I were able to climb on top of the plane, and view the inside of the cockpit and tail, with many wires and components still left behind. It felt like catching a glimpse of a long-lost time period! Coupled with the beautiful forest views and the serene location, this 1971 Aero Commander 560A crash site was one of the most fascinating and intriguing abandoned locations I have ever explored, despite the difficulty it took to get there. Unfortunately, due to its relative obscurity, I will not be revealing the exact location of this plane, in order to protect its integrity and keep it safe from further vandalism and looting.
