Sehwan Sharif is a historic city in Sindh, Pakistan, world-renowned for the Shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. It serves as a major spiritual hub, attracting millions of pilgrims of all faiths annually.
Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar
Born as Syed Usman Marwandi (1177-
1274), he was a 12th-century Persian Sufi saint, poet, and philosopher.
• The Titles: He is called "Lal" (ruby) for his glowing complexion, "Shahbaz" (noble spirit), and "Qalandar" due to his wandering dervish lifestyle.
• Legacy: He settled in Sehwan around 1251, establishing a center for learning and spreading teachings of love, tolerance, and unity.
• Dama Dum Mast Qalandar: This famous spiritual song (qawwali) is a tribute to his legacy and remains a staple of Sufi music across South Asia.
• Dhamaal: A daily ritual involving ecstatic, trance-like dancing accompanied by rhythmic drum-beating (dhol). It is believed to have been practiced by the saint himself.
• The Urs Festival: The annual death anniversary (Urs) is celebrated for three days starting on the 18th of Sha'aban. The
2026 Urs is expected to fall around February 6-8, 2026 (subject to moon sighting), following the successful 2025 celebration held in mid-February.
• Inclusivity: The shrine is unique for its pluralism, being a site of devotion for both Muslims and Hindus.
