But even as the nation celebrated, violence and intimidation marred festivities in multiple states.

In Raipur, a mob armed with sticks barged into a mall and vandalised Christmas decorations, forcing police to register an FIR against 30 accused. In Bareilly, Hindutva groups recited the Hanuman Chalisa outside a major church in Cantonment area as videos flooded social media. In Assam’s Nalbari, St. Mary’s School Christmas décor was allegedly destroyed by VHP and Bajrang Dal members who forced their way in.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) issued a public appeal urging PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and state governments to ensure protection for Christian communities. Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin also condemned violence against minorities, calling it unacceptable.
