Firefighters in McAllen, Texas have a special tradition for those who retire after 20 years of service.
The retiree is honored by the entire department at a ceremony unique to McAllen.
It is a ceremony that brings a firefighting career full circle. The first assignment on the first
day of work for each new firefighter is to learn how to properly raise the U. S. flag outside the fire station.
The last assignment for a retiring firefighter now is to officially lower the U. S. flag. This happens
while the rest of the department stands by smartly dressed in freshly pressed uniforms.
The flag that the retiree lowers is then folded according to established protocol and presented to
the honoree as a memento of his/her years of service. Volunteers from the ranks hand craft a
shadow box case for the flag which can then be displayed at the retirees home and kept as
a family heirloom. The department salutes the honoree as he is led to a fire engine for a traditional
"last ride" before official retirement.
