But for how long, ask the critics? Authors are struggling to make a living, independent booksellers are closing, and more than 60% of 18-to-30-year-olds prefer to watch a movie than read book.

The digital revolution is transforming everything - a lot for the better. It is now easier and cheaper for an author to get published than ever before. A few years ago a young author committed suicide because he found it impossible to find a publisher who would publish his book. If only he had waited a few years! Nowadays you can self-publish and print books on demand to the highest technical quality. Digital has democratized publishing.

A lot of books will become e-books, but insiders reckon there will still be a market for posh books - high quality volumes you can hold in the hand. Time will tell if they're right.

Over the years the London Book Fair has grown in size and importance and is now considered as "a mecca" for European publishers, booksellers, rights agents and media trend spotters. If you're a budding author this is the place to come. During the exhibition there are a mass of seminars discussing everything from how to write a best-seller,to rights negotiation and the sales and how to exploit print, audio, TV, the Internet and film and digital channels. Besides visiting publishers stands you could catch the long escalator up to the International Righs Centre (IRC) - the escalator of dreams - to find out what the world has to offer the modern author.

Alas, this was the last time the LBF was held in the vast Earls Court Exhibition Centre. The fair will be back at Olympia in future years, but many people will miss the atmospheric art deco building that has served Londoners well for over 70 years.
