*Essential Safety Requirements for Casing Operations*
Ensuring safety during casing operations is crucial for maintaining efficiency and protecting personnel on site. Below are the key safety measures that must be followed:
#### *1. Minimal Safety Requirements*
*Certification for Drillers:* All drillers operating new-generation rigs must be tested and certified to use the cyber chair independently, similar to crane certification. This certification must be part of the safety training matrix.
*Joint Safety Assessments (JSA):* Rig contractors and service providers must align and bridge their JSAs before starting joint operations. A representative must review and approve the integrated JSA, which should include:
1. Safe operational and maintenance procedures for elevator use, including controlled TDS/elevator speed.
2. Higher block speed is acceptable in certain operations, but slow speed is mandatory when approaching a casing collar.
3. Power tong operators must perform a visual inspection of the casing spider elevator after each joint is set in the spider slips.
4. On rigs with cyber chairs, the Driller must engage first gear for the entire casing job due to brake lag time.
5. The Driller must stop the elevator above the casing top to prevent jarring and equipment damage before carefully lowering it into position.
6. Continuous monitoring by the Stabber is required during elevator lowering, with clear hand and voice signals to indicate movement or emergency stops.
7. A clear line of sight between the Driller and Stabber must be maintained, using camera aids if necessary.
8. The JSA must specify criteria for stopping operations and inspecting equipment for damage.
9. A hands-free communication system must be in place and operational at all times during casing operations.
10. All rig floor personnel must stay clear of the drop zone for safety.
#### *2. Communication and Monitoring*
*Hands-Free Communication:* A hands-free talk-back communication system must be available and installed on all rigs to facilitate communication between the Driller and Stabber.
*Electronic Monitoring:* Regular spot checks and evaluations of electronic strip chart data must be performed, reviewing block position, block speed, weight on hook, and other critical parameters. Previous job data should be used for benchmarking.
#### *3. Equipment and Setup*
*Safe Air Hose Routing:* When setting up for casing operations, the pressurized air hose for operating the spider elevator must be routed along the Kelly hose or TDS service loop. This requirement must be included in the JSA for all rigs.
By implementing these safety protocols, casing operations can be conducted efficiently while minimizing risks and ensuring a secure working environment.
