🌄 Starting the Bukhansan Hiking Adventure
The video kicks off with the hosts preparing for a hiking trip to Bukhansan Mountain (북한산국립공원) in the north of Seoul. Despite the chilly two-degree morning and their lack of proper winter gear, their Canadian roots leave them undeterred. They navigate the Seoul metro, transferring lines to reach Dobongsan Station, the gateway to Bukhansan.
🥞 Fueling Up with Hotteok (호떡) – Korean Street Pancakes
Before starting the hike, the first order of business is grabbing some Hotteok (호떡)—warm pancakes filled with honey and cinnamon. These treats provide an energy boost and a touch of comfort on a cold morning, getting everyone in good spirits for the day’s adventure.
🏔️ Arriving at Bukhansan National Park: Preparation & Trail Selection
Upon arrival at the park entrance, the hosts notice the variety of shops selling hiking gear for those who come unprepared. They check the trail maps and select the easiest route to Uiam (우이암), with plans for more challenging hikes in the future. Bukhansan means "mountain north of the Han River" and offers extensive hiking options.
🚶♂️ Trail Experience: Paved Paths, Temples & Rest Stops
The hike begins on unexpectedly paved paths. The trail is well-developed, with signage, rest stops, and several Buddhist temples along the way. There’s time to appreciate quirky sights like giant leaves and encounters with “mountain kitties” near temples.
⛰️ Climbing Towards the Peak: Challenge & Scenic Views
As the trail progresses, the path grows steeper, especially in the final 200 meters. The hosts scramble over rocks, sometimes using ropes for support. The reward? Spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and cityscape from the top. The sense of accomplishment is high, and the journey feels well-earned.
👟 Descending the Mountain: Going Off-Trail
The descent is eventful, with one host forced to slide down due to wearing the wrong shoes—a testament to the importance of proper footwear! They inadvertently stray off the main path, adding a bit of adventure to the return journey.
🍲 Traditional Post-Hike Korean Meal: Haemul Pajeon, Sundubu Jjigae & Makgeolli
No Korean hike is complete without a hearty meal. The hosts indulge in haemul pajeon (해물파전)—a thick, crispy seafood pancake—along with sundubu jjigae (순두부찌개), a bubbling tofu stew, and a bowl of makgeolli (막걸리), traditional Korean rice wine. The pajeon stands out as one of the best they’ve ever tasted, loaded with green onion and seafood.
🥟 Hotteok for Dessert: The Real Greasy Deal
For dessert, a different style of Hotteok is sampled—fried, fatter, and filled with pine nuts, delivering rich, festive flavors that the hosts describe as “Christmas in a cup.”
🕒 Trip Reflections & Practical Tips
The entire outing, including metro travel, hiking, and meals, takes about a full day—roughly three hours of hiking and an hour each way on public transport. The hike is accessible for beginners, though the final stretch can be challenging. The hosts are especially impressed by the fitness of older Korean hikers, many of whom easily outpace them on the trails.

The video ends on a positive note, with the hosts feeling fulfilled by their Bukhansan adventure, delicious food, and the vibrant local hiking culture. They encourage viewers to try the hike, come prepared, and enjoy the full experience, promising more Korea travel videos every Monday.
